Welcome to “Core Skills and Adjustements to Practice.”
This is a three day on-line short course and also Module 2 in the BPS Approved Certificate and Diploma in Autism and Mental Health.
This is a comprehensive course, covering a significant topic. When thinking about adjustments to practice we have given consideration to different communication, sensory, information processing and thinking styles alongside differences in relation to gender, gender identity, language and diversity. All very important issues when supporting either diagnosed or undiagnosed autistic and neurodivergent people.
Whilst we incorporate reference to the medical model within this module (as it is currently the main system for assessment and diagnosis) it is our aim to support you in embedding neuro-affirmative practices alongside these processes.
The PICASSO skills framework, spotting the signs tools, inside out descriptions, good practice checklists, scenarios, case studies, worksheets and resources are there to support you with establishing an inside out approach to your practice. The reflective practice worksheets are there to help you think about the application of learning into practice.
We are joined in this module by Nicola Hodges (Neurodivergent parent/carer), Cathy Wassell (Neurodivergent CEO of Autistic Girls Network), Dr Nikki Kiyimba (Consultant Clinical Psychologist), Professor Tony Attwood (Consultant Clinical Psychologist) and Alison Drewitt (Consultant Speech and Language Therapist).
All the resources are accessible via the learning management platform. There is a video introduction to Module 2 on the Welcome and Introduction page.
We wish you well with the course!
Warmest wishes,
