Welcome to the NCAMH course on Autism, Alexithymia, Masking/Camouflaging and Synethesia.
- This two-day online training course introduces you to a “model for understanding & supporting autistic people who experience Alexithymia/Low Interoceptive Awareness, Masking/Camouflaging and Synesthesia.”
- You will increase your awareness of how these experiences may impact on an autistic person’s mental health and wellbeing alongside increasing your access to skills, tools, approaches and strategies that support increased self awareness, self-advocacy, self-care, self-agency, self-esteem and self-confidence.
By the end of this course you will have:
- Been introduced to a model of understanding alexithymia, masking/camouflaging and Synesthesia amongst autistic people
- Considered the importance of understanding the connections between alexithymia and low interoceptive awareness.
- Been introduced to a range of psychoeducation, screening and spotting the signs tools to support increased self-awareness and understanding of what supports may be most helpful
- An understanding of the impacts of alexithymia, low interoceptive awareness, masking/camouflaging and synesthesia on the mental health and well-being of autistic people.
- Awareness of the impacts of masking and camouflaging on self-identity and self-esteem.
- Access to tools and strategies that support increased self-awareness, body-mind awareness, interoceptive awareness, self-agency and balance (including mindfulness based approaches).
- Considered the current research, literature and evidence base in relation to alexithymia, interoception, masking/camouflaging and synesthesia.
- Listened to autistic people talk about their own lived experiences and what is helpful
- Practiced using the tools and strategies that you have been introduced to, and considered how these approaches may be integrated into your own practice.
There are six lessons in this course with a mixture of tutor-led sessions, podcasts, additional video clips, articles, worksheets/exercises, review of resources and completion of reflective practice worksheets.
You will be able to access the course handouts, workbooks and reflective practice worksheets from the welcome and introduction page. You can access any worksheets, tools and resources from within the Lesson on the learning management platform.

This is a two day on-line training programme (approximately 16 hours of learning). However, there are supplementary learning materials that you may also like to access so please allow longer if you want to follow through on all the links that we share. Everyone learns at a different pace so there is no pressure to complete it in one day, please allow longer if you want to go over a lesson or listen to some of the videos again.

There is a short mini quiz at the end of each lesson, these are not there to catch you out but just to check that you have understood the key learning points in each lesson. You can take the quiz as many times as needed. Once you have completed the mini quiz you will be able to move onto the next lesson. If you get stuck or need any help please e-mail hello@ncamh.co.uk.

Yes, you can build up towards the Certificate and Diploma on a modular basis, this module/short course will count towards the Certificate and Diploma. To book on to another module please go on to the website home page.
