Sensory Awareness and Regulation.

Are you a practitioner supporting autistic people with co-occurring mental health conditions?

This sensory awareness and regulation one-day online training course introduces you to the “Sensory System” the link between sensory regulation and mental health & “tools for sensory regulation.” Essential knowledge and skills when supporting autistic people with co-occurring mental health conditions.
You can take this course as a stand-alone module or as Module 3 in the BPS Approved Certificate and Diploma in Autism and Mental Health.  All course materials are available online via a learning management platform so you can complete at your own pace and time.  

What will I learn on this course?

  • How the sensory system works.
  • The role of sensory integration in supporting sensory modulation.
  • How sensory over and under stimulation may impact on an autistic person’s mental health and wellbeing.
  • How to spot the signs of sensory preferences
  • How to spot the signs of sensory hyper and hypo-sensitivities as part of an initial screening/assessment.
  • Ability to use the sensory spotting the signs tool to increase the client’s awareness of sensory experiences and their possible support needs.
  • Ability to use Dan Siegel’s hand model of the brain to demonstrate how sensory dysregulation leads to increased stress and the fight/flight response.
  • How to use the Sensory Ladder as a tool for describing different sensory & emotional states.
  • How to spot the signs of autistic burnout, meltdown, and shutdown as part of sensory over stimulation.
  • Ability to use the autistic person’s hierarchy of needs as a psychoeducation tool and model for framing an autistic person’s sensory support needs.
  • The importance of proprioceptive supports in supporting daily sensory regulation.
  • How to use the Sensory Resources Pack as a tool for increasing self-awareness (psychoeducation) and access to sensory supports.
  • Ability to use 20 proprioceptive tools for improved sensory regulation.
  • Increase practitioners, access to tools, approaches and strategies that support sensory and emotional regulation.
  • Reviewed the literature and best practice approaches for sensory and emotional regulation.
