National Training programme for all front-line practitioners

The National Centre for Autism and Mental Health (NCAMH) have been training practitioners across the UK and internationally to develop autism informed and responsive services over the last few years. This has been via our two signature courses the BPS Approved Certificate in Autism and Mental Health and the BPS Diploma in Autism and Mental Health.

Practitioners have also accessed the BPS Approved individual modules and short courses. For example, Eating Disorder Teams have commissioned the three-day Autism and Eating Disorder/Disordered Eating/ARFID training course, supported by reflective practice sessions.

Making a difference to the lives of autistic and neurodivergent people

NHS Trusts, GP’s, Health and Social Care practitioners, Local Authorities and Education providers have completed the training and are now seeing the real difference that increased knowledge, awareness and skills are making to their setting and practice.

Building skills and confidence

The main aim of the training is to build practitioner awareness, skills and confidence when seeking to meet the needs of autistic and neurodivergent clients with co-occurring mental health support needs.

Offering autism informed and responsive services at the point of contact, whether it’s as part of an assessment, gateway service, referral, support, or treatment team can make a real difference to lives of autistic and neurodivergent people. Early support can prevent a mental health crisis and distressing hospital admission.

Practitioners who have completed the training are able to offer early support to all clients (whether they have a diagnosis or not). Practitioners across mental health and allied services have said how useful the resources have been for all their clients and how much their confidence has increased when supporting autistic and neurodivergent people.

There are over 144 resources and strategies incorporated into the training across the BPS Approved Certificate and Diploma (an average of twelve ready to use resources per module/short course).

Transforming mental health services

We know from research that hospitals can be especially traumatic for autistic and neurodivergent people due to sensory, communication, information processing and thinking style differences. The Government acknowledge this in the NHS 10 Year Plan and Autism Strategy. Both set out commitments to transforming care. The Government’s aim is that wherever possible autistic and neurodivergent people with co-occurring mental health support needs remain in the community.

The training provided by NCAMH is a key vehicle through which this programme of change is supported through access to training for all frontline practitioners. It is vital that commissioning pathways work in tandem with service transformations.
