Welcome to the NCAMH Course, “Understanding Autism and Mental Health”
This two-day online training course introduces you to a “An inside out model for understanding autism and mental health.”
This course will ensure that you have access to the knowledge, skills and tools to spot the signs of mental health concerns and begin to provide access to early neuro-affirmative supports.”
This is a stand-alone course and Module 1 in the BPS Approved Certificate and Diploma in Autism and Mental Health. All course materials are available via the online learning management platform so you can complete at your own pace and time.
What will you learn on this course?
- Reasons behind the high rates of co-occurring mental health conditions amongst autistic people.
- What autistic people have said about their experiences.
- Barriers to services.
- The types of co-occurring mental health issues autistic people may experience.
- An inside out model for supporting autistic people (including the double empathy problem, monotropism, splinter skills, the spiky profile and sensory hyper and hypo sensitivities)
- Knowledge, awareness, and skills for supporting autistic people with co-occurring mental health conditions (with access to resources and tools).
- The role of special interests and self-stimulatory movements and speech and how to use the supporting resource packs (SPINS and STIMS).
- Use the reflective practice worksheets to deepen your own self- awareness and application of learning into practice.
There are eight lessons in this course with a mixture of tutor led sessions, additional video clips, articles, worksheets/exercises, review of resources and completion of reflective practice worksheets.
Please pace your learning, the course guide is there to help you think and plan your study, using the breakdown table for each lesson. Some practitioners have found it helpful to work on one lesson per week.
